1916 Dublin and Thomas Ashe
Walking Tour

Introduction

When recounting the exploits of the men and women who took on empires throughout history, we sometimes perhaps overlook the less eulogised chapters of events that for whatever reason are sometimes overlooked in the greater scheme of monumental miracles. Such sentiments might be attributed to the collection of revolutionaries that took up the baton of redemption that courage held in its grasp in Dublin on Easter Monday 1916. The capital held centre stage because for a variety of reasons the Uprising was largely confined to a number of strategic locations therein. But not far from the metropolis another battle took place and yielded success for the insurgents.

Our tour recounting the story of 1916 combines the events in Dublin city centre and surrounds with the occurrences in the Royal County, and the only other military engagement outside of Dublin which in essence yielded success for the insurgents. This then is a two county tour recounting the exploits of 1916 in all its tragedy and triumph.

The Experience

The first part of our tour takes you to some of the places and events that preceded and shaped the Rising and its date with destiny. The second segment of our tour takes us to the Royal County which recounts the exploits and successes and tragedy of what took place on a fateful day in history. So why not sample the sights of the city with the surrounds of the countryside by joining us on our two counties 1916 Dublin and Thomas Ashe tour. The name Ashe looms large in our story

In addition we go the extra furlong with our story of a horse regarded as the greatest steeplechaser of all time, a legend whose name still commands massive respect within the arena of the Sport of Kings. Stories of Highway men and infamous leaders along with Archaeological findings will also be on our card as well as a connection with Hollywood. The added incentive with this tour is that it will also be Eco friendly.

The tour duration in total will be approx. five hours. Allow for travelling from Dublin city centre to Meath via Public Transport and return which normally would take 1 and a half hours approx. So this should be factored into your schedule.

The guide will meet with you in the city at an arranged meeting point and having completed the city centre tour will then accompany you to Meath for the second part of the tour. It is recommended to have lunch in Ashbourne on arrival following which the second part of the tour will commence.

Please note we cannot absolutely guarantee times will be rigidly adhered to as we are using public transport. For that reason we intend travelling outside peak hours. In addition we have to ensure that group sizes are kept small thus we anticipate that six people might be the maximum number that this type of tour can accommodate. In terms of a completion time we anticipate that 6 hours approx. should suffice to cover all aspects of our combined tour.
